Facilitating Better Balance Part 1

I work with a wide demographic of amateur and professional golfers as well as Major League Baseball players. You may not think that these sports have much in common but the mechanics of the golf swing and batting are almost identical. One of the key common components in both sports - they require a tremendous amount of balance.
 
Working with professional athletes is a lot of fun as they are open for almost anything, but my true joy is helping the average golfer (just like me) perform better on the course and feel better off the course. This week we will focus on the topic of balance, the first week offering a simple series of balancing exercises while next week our program includes balance and hip opening exercises in one.

Tree Pose:


Par Level:
Begin by focusing on a spot on the floor, approximately four feet in front of your yoga mat. Focus and breathe deeply through the nose. Feel your self grounded, connected to the floor. Once you feel grounded, place the left foot on the right ankle and hold for ten deep breaths. If you want to challenge yourself, close your eyes for as long as possible. Switch sides.

Birdie Level:
Place your foot on the inner thigh. Bring the hands to the waist and then above the head. Hold for five to ten breaths and switch sides.

Eagle Level:
Extend the leg and hold for five deep breaths. Switch sides.
