| One thing I know for sure is that everything changes. Nothing stays the same including our bodies and what our body requires to stay healthy and fit. What we strived for in our twenties changes in our thirties, forties and so on. When I watch advertising for fitness products I realized they are targeting a very small demographic of our society, considering by the year 2010, 50% of the United States will be over the age of fifty. Rock hard abs? Of course, who doesn’t want rock hard abs? What about powerful posture, strong, flexible, lean bodies, capable of sustaining us through life with energy, mental acuity, a deep sense of overall wellness and purpose? How about a fitness program that teaches you ways to manage your energy, values times of rest and recovery, facilitates muscular balance as well as a balanced life? In over twenty years of fitness training, my students run the gamut from juniors to seniors, the physically challenged to high performance professional athletes. This experience as well as my personal journey helped me develop The Roberts Flex-Fit Method (RFFM), a unique, hybrid wellness program. Our methodology targets specific sports such as golf, walking / running, tennis, swimming or paddling and teaches you how to age consciously, purposefully. It is all about balance The RFFM is about balance. Physically we work the muscles of the front and back body, balance strength and flexibility and balance power with periods of recovery. When possible we use compound movements, enhancing proprioception, the understanding of how your body moves in space, critical to aging gracefully. Types of flexibility and strength conditioning are utilized - dynamic, static, active elongation, explosive, restorative or passive. Flexion exercises are balanced with extension, strength with flexibility, balance with breath. The breath is the mirror to the mind The most important piece of the RFFM is the application of breathing. For most of us we spend our days holding our breath, or breathing in very shallow, short strokes. You will learn proper breathing techniques, the sports and life application of various breathing techniques and the appropriate applications for such techniques. Most importantly we use the breath to quiet the mind, facilitate “moving inward” and help you practice” mindful intention”. Accessing Your untapped power sources Proper posture, foot function, the ability to access the pelvic floor and deep transverse abdominus muscles are critical to accessing your untapped power. Much of our content focuses on these sources of strength and stability. Modify, modify, modify and honor who and where you are in life and sport Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Every single exercise in the RFFM offers modifications, enabling each and every student the possibility for success. Built on the concept of building blocks, we present the fundamentals of each exercise and if you desire, guide you to the highest levels of physical intensity. |
